Living in Jing An is without doubt living in downtown Shanghai. Its pulse is the busy and bustling Nanjing Rd with its commercial buildings and high end shopping malls towering over rows of brand name stores and fashionable boutiques. The area’s heart lies within the mustard walls of the district’s namesake, the beautiful Jing An temple with its stone lions watching guard day and night.
Despite the hustle and bustle of Nanjing Rd there are many families that live in a number of family friendly compounds throughout the district that lay on and to the north and south of Nanjing Rd.
The Portman Shanghai Centre apartments set on Nanjing Rd and opposite the historic Shanghai Convention Centre sets itself apart from many compounds in Shanghai. The huge complex built over 20 years ago boasts The Ritz Carlton Hotel, commercial office towers, shops, dining, cafes and an international supermarket, all in a one stop shop. Add to this a pre-school centre and 5 star sports facilities and this centre is without doubt the most convenient family friendly apartment in Shanghai. Shanghai Centre’s long time rival the Kerry Centre Apartments have been closed for renovations and will be opening in 2013. No doubt these apartments will be super doper too.
To the east of Nanjing Rd near the corner of Shimen Yi Rd are two popular blocks, the modern serviced apartments of Crystal Pavillion and the stylish apartments of Jing An Four Seasons. Right atop Nanjing West subway, tucked behind Marks & Spencers and right by a great dining street these two properties are really handy for shopping, transport and dining. Whilst the blocks lack green space for kids to run around each has their own sports club with play facilities for littlies. One block north of these apartments you will find a large compound named Ladoll with apartments set around a lovely green area with bridges, boardwalks and ponds. All apartments here are individually designed and not one is it can take time to find one that suits your taste and style.
City Castle is a great medium rise apartment block two blocks north of Nanjing Rd on Xin Zha Rd. The nice and peaceful compound is set back off the street and has some good quality, individually designed apartments with a great clubhouse. Set on the next block north is a popular local block called New Territories which due to its lower rentals and nice green grounds is filling fast with expat families. Further down Xinzha Rd towards the west you will find two really popular apartment compounds for families called Eight Park and One Park. One Park is the older compound with its many blocks surrounding a common grassed and paved area which provide a nice refuge from the hustle and bustle of the streets and great play area for the kids. It has a really spacious clubhouse in its basement with all amenities like indoor pool and gym as well as a kids play area. 8 Park apartments are newer and more modern with clean lines. They have a small outdoor play area and a fabulous fully equipped stylish club. These apartments are medium priced for the area and are an attractive choice for young families. Last but not least there are the spacious apartments of The House which is a lovely high end low rise apartment block with beautiful 400sq plus luxury apartments for the rich and famous.
South of Nanjing Rd you will find a couple of good choices for families at Grand Plaza on Jul Lu Lu which is an oldie but a goodie with some apartments being nicely renovated. City Apartments on the corner of Shan Xi Nan Rd and the busy Yan An Rd is set behind the City Hotel and has very attractive recently renovated apartments with fabulous night views. Just down the road from the Hilton is Jing An 8 which are stylish serviced apartments set closeby a dining and entertainment precinct. Running between Da Gu Rd and Wei Hai Rd is the lovely Top of City with loads of choices of apartment styles many with lovely lake views. A club and kids playground and mini beach makes this a good family location for those with low to medium budgets.
