Well, in honour of Women’s Day 2014 we have some pretty impressive reasons to celebrate women in business in China.
Thankfully, the impact of women in the development of each society is increasing all over the world and we can see a major growth in the numbers of professional women moving towards self improvement and progress in the past two decades. Here is some hard data about the evolution of women in China, including expat women.
In recent years, more Chinese women are sitting on company boards and taking senior management positions than the “whole world average” which I reckon is pretty impressive. According to the Grant Thornton International Business Report 2014, China ranks first in terms of the proportion of senior roles filled by women at 38 percent, beating the global average by 14 percentage points. This Report covered 12,500 companies in 45 countries and regions.
Reinforcing these figures, according to the Shanghai Statistics Bureau, Shanghai’s proportion of women with college education or above in 2010 jumped 8.9 percentage points from that in 2000 and a survey conducted by Shanghai’s Fudan University has revealed that female journalists make up half the total number of working journalists in Shanghai! Go girls!!
On the other hand, being a woman and moving in a foreign country is not easy and problems run far deeper than money. Some of the more prevalent issues may include a loss of identity however there are several organizations and societies that can help women through this transition:
“The Expatriate Professional Women’s Society” (EPWS) helps create bridges between working women in Shanghai through stimulating & engaging events that offer members opportunities for sharing, learning and support.
Here are other organizations that can help you adapt and develop in Shanghai!
Community Center Shanghai
Shanghai Properties. OUR PERSONAL REAL ESTATE WEBSITE that offers you properties, valuable information and helpful living advice in Shanghai!
So let’s keep improving the rates of involvement of women in professional areas of societies as well as provide encouragement and support between us all. Wishing all women a very hearty congratulations for the wonderfully successful International Women’s Day! And to all those readers that support women’s growth in society, please like and share with one and all.
Happy International Women’s Day 2014!
