Christmas Churches in Shanghai 2014

Christianity arrived in China after Buddhism, with the first documented case from the 7th century.  Currently, according to the CIA World Factbook, China’s Christian population is around 3-4%. A 2008 article on the Economist estimates that China has about 130 million Christians but the official government figures are much lower at 21 million. The vast differences in these figures could be because 20-50 million officially belong to a church, with the majority members of Protestant churches and the rest attending “house churches” which are private gatherings in homes.

Interestingly the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association (CCPA) oversees Catholics in China, although it is not recognised by the Vatican as the CCPA does not acknowledge the Pope and appoints its own Bishops.

With over 50 million copies of the Bible printed in China it has earned global status as the largest gospel spreading nation.
