Their weekly classes include Ashtanga (led, Basics, and Mysore), Hatha, Yin, Hatha Vinyasa, Prenatal, Basics, Mediation, Baby and Kid’s classes, and more. They pride themselves on being a non-judgmental and non-dogmatic community that caters to beginners and advanced practitioners alike. They believe that yoga is not simply about posture and pose, but community, relationship and living a mindful life on and off the mat.

3) Bikram Yoga
Bikram Yoga is a system of yoga that Bikram Choudhury synthesized from traditional yoga techniques. Bikram’s classes run exactly 90 minutes and consist of a set series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises. These practices use heat during the practices to help flush toxins out of the body, promote relaxation and well being, accelerate cardiovascular action, and facilitate calorie burning. They offer English, Chinese or Bilingual classes. No previous experience is necessary and no flexibility is needed. Just make sure you drink lots of water before you attend!

4) Hatha
The Hatha Yoga Center is proud to be recognized as the first professional yoga center in Shanghai, teaching in the tradition that it’s founders learned from the great Iyengar of India. Throughout China, Hatha Yoga Center is respected and well-known by serious yoga practitioners and those new to the practice alike. All of the yoga classes taught by the teachers at the Hatha Center are authentic and true to the classic yoga styles. The Center offers classes of Bikram Hot Yoga, Ashtanga, Flow, Hatha, Intro to Yoga, Power, Iyengar, Yoga Dance, and Dance Meditation. The teachers come from a variety of backgrounds- Chinese Senior teachers, American, and Indian Yoga Masters.

5) Om Factory
Originally established in New York in 2007, Om Factory quickly grew in popularity and was soon voted the Best Yoga Studio in New York by reviewers of City Search. They offer Traditional Yoga as well as Innovative Yoga classes such as AcroYoga, Yoga Fight Club, Budokon Yoga, Breakti Vinyasa, Hoop Vinyasa and Aerial Art programs. They are particularly known for their comprehensive and innovative Aerial Yoga trainings.

6) Red Door Yoga
This studio focuses on Traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga practices. Their teachers have a great deal of experience, which helps students develop a solid foundation in the basics before moving on to more advanced positions. They realize that finding a healthy and meaningful life in the city requires work and conscious awareness and that by facing and overcoming these challenges, is how we really grow: in yoga and in life. You can find them in the Jing’an Temple area.

7) Yoga 109
This Yoga studio proudly promotes their Iyengar practices such as Asana, Pranayama and Astanga, as well as Meditation. The Iyengar yoga methods are a balanced and penetrating exploration of Patanjali’s eight limbs of yoga. It has the unique aspects of technique, sequencing and timing to ensure that each student is correctly and safely prepared to progress. They offer classes, workshops and teacher trainings for beginners to intermediate students. Their classes are conducted in the French Concession.

Things to consider:

– Where is the studio located? Is it in a convenient location so you don’t spend a lot of money and time commuting?
– Does the schedule suit your needs? Does it offer enough classes at times you are available to attend?
– Are the yoga rooms well ventilated and temperature controlled?
– Are the mats and materials sanitized?
– Are the dressing areas and shower rooms clean?
– How secure are the lockers?
– Is there sufficient privacy to change clothes?
– What is the level of ease for joining a class? Are reservations necessary?
– Are the teachers certified? Are they good practitioners?
– Do they respect differences in body types and personal reasons for taking yoga?
– What is the vibe of the studio? Would you look forward to going there?
– Does the staff look like they enjoy working there? Are they friendly?
– Is their pricing competitive?
– Do they have pricing packages?

Hope these details will help you find your ideal studio and happy practicing!

Buying a SIM card for your phone in China

If you are traveling or moving to China and are considering purchasing a SIM card for your phone once you get here, here are a few steps to make the process easier.

At Shanghai Properties we know the concerns of expatriates because we are expatriates! We specialize in relocation within Shanghai and help expatriates find their dream home in this amazing, modern metropolis. Besides real estate, we also offer many other free services for expats. Visit our website at www.shanghaiprops.com for more information or you can contact our real estate specialist, Adrienne Farrelly, at manager@shanghaiprops.com

iphone
1) Check to see if your phone can work with other countries SIM cards
Before leaving home, you want to make sure your phone is unlocked. If not, your phone will not work with any other SIM cards other than the mobile network the phone is already locked to. An easy way to test this is to try to make a call using a friend’s SIM card that uses a different carrier. If you can make calls, your phone is already unlocked. If you’re buying a phone just before traveling abroad, you can also easily ask your seller if the phone is already unlocked.

2) Buying a China SIM card
Once you’ve arrived in China, you can now purchase your SIM card. If you own an iPhone you will have to purchase a microSIM, which is basically a SIM card that is cut down to size to fit your iPhone’s SIM card slot. It should be the same price as a normal SIM card. If you are unsure if you want to buy a SIM card, be aware that international roaming charges can be very high, so if you are planning on staying in China for a long duration, it is strongly advised to use a local SIM card.

There are three major mobile service carriers in China from whom you can buy your SIM card: China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom. All have different plans but all offer 3G service. Depending on your usage and preferences, certain mobile carrier plans may be better than others, but China Unicom is generally the recommended choice for foreigners living in large cities. You should confirm with your provider if your SIM card supports international calls before making international calls, which may be quite expensive.

If you happen to exceed your monthly data allowance, you will need to recharge or “top up” your account. In order to do this, you just need to return to your carrier’s retail outlet or a nearby convenience store and purchase a recharge card. If you choose to visit a nearby convenience store just tell them “Jia Qian DianHua” or show them this: 加钱电话. They will know what you mean, then just follow the given instructions.

cellphone
3) Buying a phone in China
Buying a phone in China has its advantages and disadvantages. If you would rather buy a Chinese phone with or without a binding contract and more data allowance, you are welcome to do so. If you are buying a contract-free phone, you usually have to purchase a SIM card separately and install it yourself. Make sure to thoroughly research the product you are looking to buy, especially if you are purchasing your phone online. Pay special attention to the product reviews because online Chinese stores are not known for their attention to detail or accuracy when describing a product. It is not uncommon to come across products with impossible specifications, which means they are fake! When you have found the phone you want from a trusted company, make sure you pay through Paypal. Paying directly to a bank account means you have no safety net if something goes wrong. With Paypal, you can always make a complaint to the intermediary and hopefully get a refund.
